Save Vegetables and Fruit Scraps for Your Dog

Introduction

We want you to stop composting and save vegetables scraps. The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines compost as, "a mixture that consists largely of decayed organic matter and is used for fertilizing and conditioning land." Before that matter nourishes the land, some of it will nourish one of your family members. I'll give you a hint. . . they are furry, four-legged, and usually linger in your kitchen while you prepare meals in hopes of snagging a scrap or two. If you guessed your dog, then you are of course correct. Vegetable and fruit scraps are full of nutrients that will benefit your dog and you won't have to spend an extra dollar.

Benefits of Saving Vegetable and Fruit Scraps

Feeding your dog vegetable and scraps will benefit them in a number of ways, including:
  • ANTIOXIDANTS - substances that protect cells from oxidative damage.
  • PHYTONUTRIENTS - plant chemicals that have shown to have positive affects on health, which contain antioxidant properties.
  • VITAMINS - in particular water-soluble vitamins B and C, which are found in fruits and vegetables.
  • MINERALS - come from non-living things chemical elements that the body needs to function.
  • FIBRE - required for gut bacteria to maintain a healthy microbiome

Vegetable and Fruit Scraps to Save

There are all sorts of scraps that you can save. Here are just a few ideas to get you started.

  • Carrot, kumara and cucumber skins
  • Broccoli stalks
  • Outer leaves of cabbage, cauliflower and broccoli
  • Tops of carrots and beetroot
  • Celery leaves
  • Limp vegetables
  • Fruit skins
  • Slightly browned fruits

Vegetable and Fruit Scraps to Avoid

  • Onions, chives and leeks
  • Grapes

Quick Tip

Next time you prepare a meal, place a second container next to your kitchen compost container so you can collect scraps for your dog. Store the scraps in the fridge until you are ready to use them. Ensure they scraps are rinsed, especially if they are not from organic or spray-free prodcue because this will remove any chemical residue.
Blend in a food processor or blender so you will increase your dog's ability to absorb all the nutrients.
Add a spoonful to your dog's meal. Use within 5 days and pour any leftovers into ice cube to freeze to treat your dog for their enjoyment later.
